Week 2, Settled

Seventy‑nine plays, published before kickoff and graded against the final box score at the stake printed beside each one. A losing week in a week the league lost four starting quarterbacks mid‑game, and the week that shaped how Week 3 is built — including a research track alongside the model.

The week the quarterbacks went down

Before the numbers, the week. Caleb Williams was carted off in the fourth quarter in Chicago. Jayden Daniels dislocated his elbow in the second quarter in Dallas. Jaxson Dart’s knee gave out in the first quarter on Monday night and his season is over. Cooper Rush, already starting for Michael Penix, left Atlanta’s game in the third. Kyler Murray and Sam Darnold never started at all, so Carson Wentz and Drew Lock did. Five of the sixteen games changed quarterback during the week or during the game, and 32 of our 79 plays sat in those games.

Every prop in those offenses was priced against a lineup that did not finish the game, and the market had no more warning than we did. That is the backdrop for everything below, and it is why we would read this week as one data point rather than a verdict.

Worth noting: the disrupted games were the steadier half of our week. The model re‑prices an offense around whoever is under center and did not overreact when the change came, and two of the five — Atlanta and Dallas — finished ahead. The larger part of the week’s total came from the calmer games, and from one market in particular, which is where the rest of this page goes.

Two weeks in, the season ledger on published plays stands at 69–91–3. The card went 7–8 — close to even on picks — and the week’s total came from the shape of the losses rather than their count. The interval is still wide this early; it narrows with every week we publish, and we will keep showing it.

Where the week actually went

Five markets became published plays. Two of them kept paying: passing touchdowns went 3–1 and rush attempts 2–0, which puts passing touchdowns at 7–2 across the season so far. Receptions, the market that carried Week 1, went 23–38–1 and accounts for most of the week’s total.

Inside receptions the split is the story. Unders went 17–27 for −5.62u; overs went 6–11–1 for −7.61u, mostly plus‑money overs on secondary receivers (the one void is DJ Moore, who left Thursday’s game in the first quarter). Looking across those picks after the fact, a striking number of them carried the same probability — the model was, in effect, making one call and printing it many times, and the ranking between them was being decided by the price rather than by anything it knew about the player. We found that, and it is the first thing that changed for Week 3.

Anytime touchdown, sized the way we said

Week 1’s review promised the anytime‑touchdown allocation would shrink to half a unit with a full unit reserved for the rare standout. It did. The seven anytime‑touchdown plays this week went 0–7, and cost 3.50u — a poor run, at a stake that made it survivable. Under Week 1’s sizing the same seven picks would have cost more than twice that. This is what a rule is for.

Tiers and days

Neither tier cleared its own break‑even this week, and unlike Week 1 the higher tier did not separate from the lower one. Thursday had one loss and one void, Sunday carried the volume, and Monday’s late card went 2–6 in a game the Giants played almost entirely with their backup after Jaxson Dart left in the first quarter.

What is different in Week 3

Two weeks is a short record, so the changes below are the ones the record already supports, not a rebuild.

Wider probabilities. The engine that turns our projections into a probability had been placing far too many picks on the same handful of numbers. It has been re‑fitted so that two different players get two different probabilities, and the card ranks on what the model knows about the player rather than on the price alone. On a re‑run of this week’s board, the share of receptions picks sharing one probability fell from over half to about two percent.
A card that mixes markets. The highlighted card is open to every market we can measure, ranked by how far our probability sits from the market’s. No single market may take more than half the card, and every market with a playable pick gets at least one slot. Passing touchdowns and rush attempts, the two markets that have paid both weeks, get the room they have earned.
Smaller stakes where the record says so. Edge‑tier picks are a flat half unit from here; they are 49–62 across two weeks and had not earned a full unit. Moneyline is a flat half unit too. Anytime touchdown keeps the half‑unit rule that held up this week.
Every pick explains itself. Tap See why on any pick for our number beside the market’s and what the beat coverage says about the player. The expert flag that used to sit beside a pick is gone; the reporting now lives inside the write‑up, where it reads as context rather than as a score.
Two tracks on one card. The model is built to do one thing well: measure how far its probability sits from the market’s, across hundreds of lines at once. It is not built to know that a starting quarterback went down on Tuesday, that a running back’s backup just landed on injured reserve, or that a defense has been giving up 220 rushing yards a game. This week taught us how much those things matter. Starting in Week 3 the highlighted card carries both. Model picks clear the probability bar exactly as before. Analyst picks come from the research side — matchups, usage, injuries, line movement and what the reporting says — each written up on its own. An Analyst pick shows what it was chosen on, and one tap into Details shows the model’s own read of that side, so the two views sit next to each other rather than one hiding the other.
Graded separately, in public. The track record now shows the two tracks side by side, at the stake and price printed before kickoff. If the research adds something the model does not have, it will show there. If it does not, that will show too. Either way you will see it before we tell you.

Every play, all 79

Every play, ordered by game day, at the stake printed on the card at the time — 0.5 to 2.5 units, set by the tier as it stood in Week 2. Nothing here is selected after the fact: this is the same list that was live before kickoff. A void is a play that never truly settled — the player left injured before the game was decided — and it returns the stake.

How this is graded. Every play is settled against the official box score at the price and stake published before kickoff. Break‑even is computed from each group’s own realised prices rather than one blanket number, because a book of plus‑money picks needs a lower hit rate than a book of favorites. Pushes return the stake; Week 2 had none. Voids are stored and counted, and excluded from both the hit rate and the return; Week 2 had one, a receiver who left in the first quarter. Picks that were still pending when a game day’s card was rebuilt are not counted — only the plays that were live at kickoff are.

A record that grows. Week 2 is the second entry in a season‑long ledger, and every week adds to it in public. Nothing here is a guarantee: sports betting carries real risk, we never publish parlays because combining picks compounds the hold against you, and you should only ever stake what you can afford to lose.
